Medicine Week has drawn to a close at Queen’s College, London, following a dynamic programme of talks, workshops and interactive sessions designed to give students meaningful insight into careers in medicine and healthcare.
Organised by Head of Science Nithya Murugan, the week brought together a diverse group of professionals from across the sector. Based on Harley Street - long associated with leading medical practice - the College was delighted to welcome nine visiting speakers, including clinicians from London Harley Street Practice and specialists connected with the Royal Veterinary College. Their contributions, alongside practical workshops led by QCL’s Science Department, created a rich and engaging experience for pupils.
Learning from Leading Professionals
Throughout the week, students explored a wide range of pathways into medicine, veterinary science and allied healthcare professions. Sessions highlighted not only the academic routes into these careers, but also the realities, responsibilities and rewards of working in the field. From a paramedic talk to a medicinal plant workshop, pupils were encouraged to think broadly about the many ways to contribute to modern healthcare.
QCL extends its sincere thanks to all visiting speakers, including Riaz Agha, Fiorenza Shepherd, Sayan Sen, Simone Gianni, Dr Theo Mentesnot, Georgia Lewis (former Deputy Head Girl and now a practising vet), Dr Bilou, Dr Tailor and Dr Iqbal, for sharing their expertise so generously. Their contributions played a key role in inspiring the next generation of doctors, vets, dentists and healthcare professionals.
Student Voice and Participation
One student reflected on the impact of the week:
"This week Queen’s celebrated Medicine Week through a series of wonderful workshops and talks… My favourite event was the CPR workshop because it was fun and engaging, helping us to build confidence in responding to real-life emergencies… I feel inspired to pursue a future as a healthcare professional.”
The programme also benefited from strong student leadership, with senior pupils Rosa and Vivian organising a series of Medicine Week quizzes that added energy and collaboration to the event.
A Lasting Impact
Reflecting on the week, the Science Department noted the importance of STEM in shaping both individual futures and wider society, with Medicine Week serving as a powerful reminder of its real-world impact.
Medicine Week is an annual highlight at Queen’s College, London. Those interested in contributing as a speaker for future events are warmly encouraged to get in touch.
